Doing a system restore is not a typical way to increase computer speed. But it sure is simple and easy. Good instructions below…

Will A System Restore Help PC Performance?
by Phyllis Brown

When our computers are not running fast enough it can be extremely maddening. There are many causes that will slow a computer down including viruses, malware, corrupt files, etc. These conditions can be corrected in unique ways as well.

You can find one of these possible repairs placed inside the PC itself and it is simple enough for everybody to do it. It’s a System Restore feature that is part of our computer operating system utilities. You can find it by going to Programs then Accessories and click on System Tools. There you should find System Restore. You ought to also see Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter here and they are additional good repair tools you should be able to use.

System Restore is really easy to do yet most regular computer users do not know about it or have never used it. When you click on the system restore tab you are taken to a box that will tell you that this feature can help if your computer is running slow or not responding correctly. It also indicates that it will not hurt any of your files and the process is completely reversible. It gives you a recommended restore point date or you can choose another one. You simply follow the instructions.

When you restore your PC you in effect place it back to the precise way it was configured a few days before. This is very effective if you have had something take place that has caused the computer to stop operating properly. An example might be if your computer was cut off all at once and when it restarted it wouldn’t work properly.

A system restore can affect operating system files, software files and registry files. It can’t fix problems more than a few days old, probably about 30 days, or restore removed or deleted files.

If your pc has gotten slower and more sluggish over an extended period of time you will need to run a register cleaning software. A registry cleaner will do basically what the restore can do as well as other important organization functions.

A computer’s RAM, or short-term-memory, is the where data is stored that is being used often and over and over again. This is the information that will be needed the most by the programs being run at the time. It is saved in the RAM so it may be opened quickly and easily and keep the computer running fast and smooth. It is an acronym for “Random Access Memory”.

So how is the RAM different from the computer’s hard drive memory? Your larger hard drive memory storage saves your documents, pictures, mp3′s, programs, and other data in a tremendously large “warehouse”. Where as the info in the RAM would be like the papers on your desk… ready to be read.

The RAM dramatically effects computer speed. Run this TEST to see if your PC has enough RAM:

Right click on the bottom toolbar of you desktop and look at the box that pops up. You should see “Task Manager” listed with about 8 other menu items – click it; when the Task Manager opens it will display tabs for: “Programs”, “Processes”, etc. These will tell you what is running on the computer.

At the bottom of the “Windows Task Manager” box you will see: “Processes: __”, “CPU Usage: __”, and “Physical Memory: __”. The Physical Memory is the RAM. CPU is Central Processing Unit (or computer’s engine). Compare the CPU Usage and the Physical Memory. CPU Usage is what percentage of your computer’s processor capacity is being used at this time. The Physical Storage Memory shows what percent of the RAM is full.

Your CPU will fluctuate greatly from second to second. It will go from 0% to 100% depending on what you are doing at the time. You have a problem if, when you stop working on the computer for a minute, it will not fall back below 20 or 30%.

The Physical Storage will vary but not as much as the CPU percent. It should not stay above 75% for a long period of time. Ideally the CPU percent would be below 55% most of the time. If not then you may need more RAM added to help your computer’s speed.

But remember, RAM is not difficult to install or expensive. When buying or even ordering a new computer, get additional RAM added to it new. It is money well spent. Some “over the counter” sticks of RAM cost less than $60 for a gigabyte… which should be more than enough. (find more help here: PC Running Slow)

The article below discusses ideas on the best registry fixer, home remedies and precautions: best registry fixer

There are a lot of solutions that you can do yourself to speed up the performance of your computer and fix registry problems. The best thing to do is to research them on the internet. You’ll find many options.

Running the free scan to be useful. And you can and should evaluate it on more than one computer (most of the software has a FREE scan). If a newer computer that is not running slow shows to have as many errors from the scan as a PC that is slow, then that registry cleaner is probably not your best choice. Usually a computer with problems will contain several hundred errors and a computer that is OK just a few dozen. It definitely doesn’t hurt to test this out before spending your money. With only a small amount of errors showing up on the scan you would need to look elsewhere for your speed problem.

Errors and corruption in the registry is the most common problem when a PC is now working properly. You may be surprised at the large number of errors in the registry once you start the clean up. An easy to use, downloaded registry repair software is usually the best first choice.

Here are other ideas to help you with your computer:

(1) It is also important that you have enough general information on computers to repair easy issues. If not you will have to call someone for assistance every time you encounter such a dilemma and that can be costly and time consuming.

(2) You ought to do a disk cleanup and defrag the computer’s hard drive. Microsoft even advises computer users to do these maintenance procedures on a recurring basis. This can be done by going to Programs then to Accessories, next to System Tools and then go to Disk Cleanup and follow the instructions. Next your can follow the same course to System Tools and click Disk Defragmenter, and once more go by the directions.

(3) You also should get rid of unneeded items at the start-up of the PC. Leave only your firewall, anti-virus and any program you think is necessary at boot up. Bear in mind you can still launch a program by hand after the PC is running. To change these items on start-up go to Programs then to Run then key in MSCONFIG and change the listing.

(4) Next, do away with all unnecessary files. Unimportant files take up space in your disk memory and cause it to perform slower. Once you have gotten rid of these files, test and see if it has improved the speed of the computer.

(5) You might also alter the layout of your computer’s BIOS for a faster speed. As soon as you adjust the boot arrangement, the PC will take a shorter time booting up because it will be able to find the hard drive directly or through a shorter route.

The computer’s registry is one of the integral parts of your computer’s processing unit. This is where application’s and utility’s data and configurations are stored. Every time you start or modify a program, data will be taken from the PC registry area or changed there. The constant use of a computer takes a toll on your pc’s registry. Before long you will begin to notice more error messages when you open some of your applications. You will also find that the computer or at least some of the programs will be slow at start-up. You may see pop-up errors… and on and on.

registry fixIf this sounds like your experience you need a registry fix that will clean up your data storage and aid in the overall performance of your computer. A disorganized registry almost always leads to slow performance in computers because the Central Processing Unit, or CPU, is having to work harder to access some of the application settings.

Computers that are networked or linked over the internet without adequate protection are very susceptible to online threats like mal-ware and ad-ware. Some of these unsolicited “programs” can actually store data on this area making it difficult for anti-virus programs to detect and remove them. These malicious applications as well as other unneeded files and data need to be remove or quarantined.

One area that creates a lot of problems for all computers is illegal or pirated software and applications. All programs and data should be “certified” by the windows online process or denied access to your computer. Unauthenticated programs may contain bugs or corrupted entries that could not be fixed as well as carry viruses. One of the leading causes of error messages is the lack of registry entries by these programs. Registry cleaners will get rid of these files, open up storage space, organize and speed up your PC.
